The Australian Dental Association recommends that children see a dentist by their first birthday or within six months of their first tooth erupting. Early visits allow for monitoring of oral development and help build familiarity with the dentist. It is also a great opportunity for our experienced dentists to educate you as parents how to care for your child's oral health.
The first visit typically includes a gentle examination of your child’s teeth, gums, and jaw. If allowing, we also give your child a fluoridated polish and clean to get them use to the noise and feel of sitting in the dental chair. Our team at Officer Smiles endeavour to make every child's visit a positive experience! Will also provide guidance on proper oral hygiene and answer any questions parents may have about caring for young teeth.
Speak positively about the dentist, read storybooks about dental visits, and bring a favorite toy or comfort item. Arriving a little early can also help your child get comfortable with the surroundings. Don't be anxious yourself in front of the child, as they can read off your emotions. The goal is to make every visit a fun experience!
After the first visit, it’s best to bring your child for check-ups every six months. Regular visits help prevent cavities, monitor dental development, and reinforce positive oral care habits.
Brush your child’s teeth twice daily, limit sugary snacks and drinks, and encourage them to drink water. As they grow, teach them to floss and follow good oral hygiene practices. Our team at Officer Smiles will offer personalized advice during your visit.
X-rays are typically not needed at the first visit unless there are specific concerns about their oral health. Our team will assess whether X-rays are necessary based on your child’s age and dental development.
Our team at Officer Smiles specializes in gentle, child-friendly care. We use positive reinforcement, patience, and fun introductions to make each visit enjoyable and help children build a trusting relationship with the dentist.
For Medicare holders that are eligible for the Child Dental Benefits Schedule (children ages 2-17), there are no out of pocket costs for your child's preventive dental care, including check-up, cleans, X-rays, extractions and fillings. Otherwise, for private patients, fees for our services are published here.
